Frequently Asked Questions About Electrolysis Permanent Hair Removal

The following Frequently Asked Questions are based on the most common queries regarding electrology practitioners. This FAQ is not intended to define a treatment or give you a comprehensive diagnosis. Please do consult your electrologist before choosing your preferred course of treatment.

What is Electrolysis?

In essence, electrolysis is the science that deals with permanent hair removal. With the use of state-of-the-art technology, small amounts of electricity are gently applied to the base of hair follicles. In the process, the hair growth tissue is destroyed. Thereby, the hair follicles regenerative ability is permanently eliminated.

The term electrolysis describes all of the methods in permanent hair removal. As a modality, electrolysis was first used in 1985 to remove hair permanently. Since then, the term electrolysis has become synonymous with the process of permanent hair removal.

During the process, the electrologist essentially inserts a fine needle along the tiny hair shaft into the natural opening of a hair follicle. A small amount of current is then passed to damage the hair growth cell, permanently.

Alternatively, other forms of medical procedures or devices such as electrolysis devices can be used to destroy hair growth cells with heat or chemical energy. In general, all of the modalities target the hair growth cells that are responsible for hair growth. A professional electrologist will weigh in different factors to determine the most ideal modality.

Currently, there are 3 modalities in use:

1. Galvanic or Electrolysis
This is a chemical process where a current produces a chemical reaction inside the hair follicle. This, in turn, eliminates the hair growth cells. This modality is commonly used in multi-needle galvanic electrolysis where up to 16 needles are used simultaneously.

2. Thermolysis or Shortwave
Under this modality, heat is used to damage the hair growth cells in the follicle. Ideally, t can be used in two ways; high-intensity current (flash method) is used in the follicle for less time, or the current user is at a lower intensity, with longer duration.

3. Blend
This modality combines both the galvanic and thermolysis current. Thermolysis is used to heat up a chemical reaction in the follicle in order to destroy the hair growth cells.

Why is Electrolysis better than other hair removal methods?

Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal treatment recognized by the FDA, and is the only true permanent hair removal method available to you in San Diego, California.

Unlike some of the other temporary methods such as waxing and laser, electrolysis procedures when performed professionally will remove any unwanted hair permanently. In addition, it can be used on a wide variety of skin types, and the results are unsurpassed.

Laser advocates usually compare the laser process to electrolysis, but keep in mind that laser-assisted hair removal is only a temporary solution. Also, it’s yet to be comprehensively evaluated for the long-term effects and safety on the person’s health and skin.

Waxing, tweezing, and threading is quite similar. Consequently, these methods are a major cause of ingrown hairs as well as discoloration of the skin. In addition, they may even result in an increase in the activity of hair growth. shaving and depilatories can also cause skin irritation, as the hairs regrow rather quickly. Such methods require a lifetime of maintenance with the need for expensive products. While many of them may appear as cheap alternatives, their long-term costs are high and are quite inconvenient.

Electrolysis usually works on most parts of your body, to give you a sleek, smooth healthy looking skin. There’s no other hair removal solution in the market that promises such a universal acceptability and success rate as electrolysis does.

Are there any infection control procedures?

There are certain standards written by the American Electrology Association (AEA) regarding infection control, following the latest recommendations from the Association for Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

How many treatment will I need?

The required number of treatments will inherently be dependent on each client. Also, depending on the area being treated, treatment sessions could range from 15 minutes to over an hour. Another factor is whether you are male or female. Please talk to our electrologist during your initial meetings to get a better estimate of the number of sessions needed.

Aspects such as the structure and quantity of hair presented, hair growth cycles, heredity, previous use of temporary modalities, stress, certain medication, and hormone function will influence the ideal treatment program for each client. For optimal results, it is best to follow the recommended treatment plan.

How much do the treatments cost?

Many different factors will affect the final cost of the whole procedure, including where the procedure will be performed, the size of the area being treated, and how much hair has to be removed.

Be sure to follow the recommendations of your electrologist in scheduling appointments. Treatments will be more frequent for areas that have previously been tweezed or waxed than for areas that have been shaved.

Is regrowth expected or will al the hairs be eliminated in one treatment?

Hirsutism, also known as excessive hair growth usually ranges from dark, coarse hair, to vellus facial, limbs, and body hair. Deep and coarse hairs might not always be removed with a single treatment, and breaking down the hair growth cells will require multiple treatments. With personal and confidential consultation with your electrologist, you will effectively create a treatment plan that fully addresses any concerns or specific hair removal needs.

What is the normal hair growth cycle?

Hair has different cycles of growth, and many of them are not visible to the eye on the skin’s surface at the same time. the hair follicle grows from the blood supply and is eventually discarded through shedding. The growth, rest, and replacement processes are known as the hair growth cycle. The series of these events are continuously repeated throughout one’s lifetime until the hair ceases to grow.
